Backend Developer Intern
Work on the Sylica API gateway, routing, billing, and observability in TypeScript on Node and Cloudflare.
- Location
- Remote (US) · New Mexico HQ optional
- Time
- 10–20 hrs / week, flexible with school
- Compensation
- Competitive intern stipend; school credit if applicable
You will help ship the core multi-provider LLM gateway: OpenAI-compatible APIs, org-scoped keys, credit metering, and streaming reliability. The stack is a modern monorepo (TypeScript, Turbo, Hono, Drizzle, Vitest) with a bias toward small, testable code paths and production-grade error handling.
What you will do
- Implement and refine gateway routes, middleware, and provider adapters behind clear interfaces.
- Improve observability: structured logging, request tracing hooks, and safe metrics that help on-call without leaking customer data.
- Participate in code review; write and maintain tests (unit + focused integration) for critical paths.
- Debug production-adjacent issues: malformed requests, retry semantics, and edge cases in streaming/SSE clients.
What we look for
- Solid programming fundamentals (data structures, async I/O) and eagerness to read unfamiliar code carefully.
- Some experience with TypeScript or JavaScript and HTTP APIs (REST, fetch, or similar).
- Familiarity with git and GitHub; comfortable working in a terminal and reading stack traces.
- Enrolled in or recently completed a CS, CE, or related program (or strong self-taught portfolio).
Nice to have
- Prior exposure to PostgreSQL, Redis, or message queues.
- Interest in LLMs and OpenAPI/OpenAI client compatibility.
- Experience with Cloudflare Workers, Docker, or CI (GitHub Actions).
How we work
You will work directly with the platform team in a high-trust, low-ego environment. We default to short PRs, written context in tickets, and async-friendly communication. We care about correctness, security, and developer experience in equal measure.
